BC: When did you first hear The Stooges?

JV: “I would have been in high school. We’d always hear stories of Iggy and how crazy he was. How bikers would always beat him up. I don’t think they ever played Florida when I was there. My mom’s boyfriend was going to jail so he sold her a house really cheap in Fort Lauterdale so he wouldn’t lose it. I lived half the year in Detroit and half the year there. Her job was renting the house during season. So I’d go to school here when it was warm down there and it was cold up here.

I remember in college, fighting with everybody for playing Raw Power. I lived in a dorm room, and everybody [in] the mainstream population of the time, they hated it. They hated it when they didn’t know who it was, and when they found out that it was Iggy, they hated it even more. There were maybe three people in the whole university that liked Iggy. Iggy was something that you could play and drive people crazy, before punk.

I started out kind of as a photographer, just doing my own magazine which Niagara was the cover girl for and she drew the back cover. She still had a little of her hippie thing. I met Niagara and Ron [Asheton] because I had this magazine. At first it wasn’t a real magazine, we just said that we were doing a magazine. But we could get in just about anywhere. We could go backstage. This is when nobody had a magazine, so they wanted us there. We could get back for Roxy Music, and we just totally devastated their bar and food thing while they were playing, just [by] saying we were from this magazine.

I was really a bad photographer. I was always drunk, and I was really cheap. Like, I’d take two pictures a night because film was so expensive. I didn’t have really good jobs. I was basically finding enough [for] people to live off. Dividing $200 with six guys. We eventually put out the magazine as a school project for a friend. He did all the work but I got all the glamour. If we were in the paper, it’d be a picture of me. All I would have to do was ask some really stupid questions, like ‘What would you do if you were invisible for a day?’ People would go ‘Why do you only ask stupid questions? You ask the stupidest questions I’ve ever heard.’ So after a while of asking people stupid questions, we got more confrontational.

People treat journalists differently. You can be really obnoxious. There’s a local band called Cyniside and he always tells the story of how we went over to his house, and we’re big guys too, and we line up cigars in his living room, [in] this really prissy house where he’s living with his wife. He goes, ‘You light up those cigars and it’s gross, then you take off your shoes and your feet smell so bad.
